Description The purpose of this classification is to control/direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic in school zones and to ensure the safety of students and other pedestrians crossing streets in school zones. Work schedule is Monday – Friday, with two shifts per day as outlined below.
  • Approximately 7:00am – 8:00am
  • Approximately 2:30pm – 3:30pm

Essential Functions

  • Directs traffic in City school zones to ensure the safety of motorists, pedestrians, and school children; prioritizes traffic flow for school buses.
  • Monitors traffic and controls as required.
  • Escorts children across roadways; monitors conduct of children in the cross-walk and related walkways.
  • Maintains community and police relations; provides directions to motorists; reports traffic violators; reports inoperative school zone traffic lights, vehicle/pedestrian accidents, and other school zone/traffic problems.
  • Provides traffic control for special events or other situations as appropriate.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and through directive signals
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, codes, ordinances, and new procedures.
  • Skill in starting, stopping, operating and monitoring the functioning of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well-established policies, procedures and standards.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Ability to exercise judgment in situations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered by established procedures or sequences.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by little or no previous experience or training involving school crossing guard procedures or traffic control; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Licenses or Certifications: Valid State of Alabama driver’s license.

Additional Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is light, requiring exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and the ability to exert physical effort involving lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects and materials of lightweight. Tasks may involve extended periods at a workstation. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in an outdoor environment. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, or traffic hazards.
