Assistant General Manager of Maintenance- Port of Mobile Coal Terminal
Coal Terminal – Rail, Barge & Marine Terminal Operations
Reports To: General Manager
The Port of Mobile is seeking an experience AGM of Maintenance to manage their extensive coal marine terminal. This operation has an extensive network of conveyor systems, rail and rotary car dumpers, continuous barge unloaders, long-run conveyor systems, stackers, reclaimers and shiploaders. We are seeking a leader of people and programs to oversee the maintenance of this multifaceted operation.
Ideal Candidate Profile & Leadership Expectations
1. Proven Maintenance Leadership in Heavy Industry
The successful candidate must demonstrate extensive maintenance leadership experience in large-scale bulk material handling operations.
- Ideally at least 15 years of progressive maintenance leadership experience in heavy industrial or bulk terminal environments.
- Demonstrated success managing complex systems at scale.
- Experience in high-throughput operations where downtime has significant commercial impact.
2. Direct Bulk Terminal Experience
Experience heavy industrial bulk handling environments such as:
- Rail operations and rotary car dumpers
- Continuous barge unloaders
- Long-run, high-capacity conveyor systems
- Stacker/reclaimers
- Shiploaders and vessel interface requirements
Experience working within a unionized workforce. Understanding of labor agreements, jurisdictional lines, and structured communication channels
3. Uptime, Reliability & Outage Planning Discipline
- Structured planning and scheduling processes
- Strong preventative and predictive maintenance programs
- Formal outage planning and execution discipline
- Cross-department coordination between Maintenance, Operations, and Commercial teams
- Budget planning expertise with a track record of operating within approved financial limits
- Creation of a culture where planners and supervisors are empowered to escalate risks early
4. Strategic Yet Hands-On Leadership
- Establish clear performance standards and accountability
- Empower frontline supervisors and planners
- Engage directly during critical events or outages
- Demonstrate strong interviewing and hiring capability for maintenance personnel
5. Defined Chain of Command & Leadership Structure
- Respect and uphold decision-making authority lines
- Eliminate ambiguity in maintenance escalation and approval processes
- Align closely with senior leadership
- Prevent confusion at the operational level through consistency and clarity

The Maintenance Manager regularly interfaces with:

Given the hazards associated with railcar dumping, heavy rotating equipment, marine operations, and elevated conveyor systems:
- Safety must be visibly demonstrated and ensure strong safety culture.
- Experience leading safety audits, compliance initiatives, and incident investigations is required.
8. Critical Spares & Reliability Investment Strategy
The candidate must implement and maintain:
- Formal critical spare identification processes
- Long-lead component forecasting
- Redundancy and risk management strategies
- Capital planning tied directly to uptime and asset preservation
- Data-driven justification for reliability investments
