Mobile is a regional center for medical care, research, and education. Nearly 15 percent of Mobile’s workforce is employed in the healthcare sector. The Mobile area is home to five major hospitals with over 1,900 beds. Area hospitals include general facilities, a children’s and women’s hospital, a private mental health hospital, and a rehabilitation hospital. Mobile is also home to a cancer research center affiliated with the University of South Alabama. In addition, Mobile is home to the first academic cancer research institute on the Gulf Coast, USA Mitchell Cancer Institute.
